What to do if you are attacked or threatened
Most of us will never be attacked. But if you know in advance what to do, it is easier to act when it matters. Your goal is always the same: to get to safety, not to win.
1. Get away
If you can leave, leave. Things can be replaced, you cannot. If someone wants your phone, wallet or bag, let them have it.
2. Run toward people and light
Go to places with people, light and open doors, such as a shop, a restaurant, a petrol station or a busy street. Avoid dark shortcuts and places where you can get stuck.
3. Shout
Make noise. Shout clearly what you need, for example "Help, call 112" or "Stay away". Noise draws attention, and attackers rarely want witnesses.
4. Call 112
Call 112 as soon as you can. The number is free and works in every EU country. Say where you are, what has happened and if anyone is hurt. If you cannot talk, keep the line open.
5. Then use SayNear
If listening is turned on, say your safety phrase, or press the panic button. Bears nearby get an alarm and can come to you while help is on the way. SayNear does not replace 112, so use both.
Self-defence: escape first
Try to calm the situation down: keep your distance, speak calmly, keep your hands visible and do not argue. Physical self-defence is only a last resort to get free and get away, never a reason to start a fight.
Afterwards
Report the crime to the police, even if it feels small. Write down what you remember as soon as possible. Ask for support: victim support organisations can help you free of charge.

This is general advice. It does not replace the police or emergency services. In an emergency, call 112.
